The setup: I have a Cox cable connection that comes into my house.
I connected the cable connection to the wan side of my linksys router
(befsr11). From the lan side of the router, I connected it to a
10/100 8 port switch (a netgear fs105). From that, I have two PCs
connected to it via DHCP. One of the PCs runs WinMe, the other runs
Linux Redhat 9 (my computer).

The problem: I can no longer connect to mail.yahoo.com or any other
website that requires a secure connection. For some reason, all
regular connections that don't don't use secure web pages, seem to be
unaffected. Also, if I go to the windowsMe computer, I have no
problems. This did not used to be the case a few weeks ago.

I did fiddle around with ifconfig to try to reestablish the
connection, to no avail. I'm wondering if I may have caused my own
problem. hehehe

The commands I evoked were this:

from the prompt, I typed "ifconfig promisc"

Here is a printout of what I get when I run ifconfig without commands:

[root@localhost Redhat9]# ifconfig
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:10:4B:9F:05:60

can someone tell me what's wrong?

If you can get to sites other than secure web sites, there is nothing
wrong with your ifconfig and route settings. Check your firewall and
your browser preferences. Some secure sites may require cookies and
Javascript.
