Can't connect to unsecured AP

My laptop will no longer allow me to connect to a unencrypted connection. I get the window that has a check box that basically says "Allow me to connect to this network even though WEP isn't enabled". I check the box and then the window pops up again and the box is still unchecked. Repeating the process does not help and I can't get past this. If I enable WEP on my network, I can access it just fine. But, there are times when I want to disable WEP and I'd like to know how I can connect to it. Btw- I didn't used to have this problem and it suddenly appeared about a month ago. What has caused this? Perhaps a Windows update?

WinXP right? Turn off "let windows manage wireless", and use the utility
that came with your interface.
