Hi

I have the following network setup:

Broadband modem
Wireless Netgear router
2 Win 98 desktop PCs connected to the router by cables
1 Win 2000 laptop connected wirelessly
1 Win XP desktop PC connected wirelessly
Networked HP printer

The above system works flawlessly

I purchased a second hand Win 98 SE laptop from a company that was selling
off their older ones, and fitted it with a belkin wireless card. The router
control panel didn't 'see' this card in its list, so I had to enter its name
and MAC address manually. I thought this was going to be a sign of trouble,
and it was!

The card then connected to the router OK, but when I open Network
Neighborhood, none of the other 4 computers can be seen. It can't connect
to the Internet either.

It did accept the installation of the networked printer though, and prints
it OK, so some sort of network connection exists

All of the existing PCs can see the laptop in Network Neighborhood and
Windows Explorer, but they can't gain access to it. A dialog box comes up
that says the computer or sharename can't be found, and telling me to ensure
I've entered its name correctly

I've installed the network protocols on the laptop, and ensured file and
printer sharing are on

Judging by the number of .pwl (password) files on the laptop, it seems that
quite a few people had access to it. I was wondering if the company that
owned the machine restricted network and Internet access in some way. If
that's the case, I can't figure out if or how they did it

Incidentally, although this is an older machine, it's more powerful than my
2 Win 98 desktop PCs, so I don't believe the power of the machine to be an
issue

Any ideas?

Thanks

Pete

honestly I would look into wiping the laptop and starting fresh with a new
install (providing you can find all the drivers required)

then you KNOW what is going on :>
