Thanks for responding to my networking issue.

I have two Windows 2K Adv Servers in the same domain.
(Just added 2nd Server) This network is setup as a LAN
without remote access routing. The IP Address scheme is
a made up to be private but is consistent throughout the
network. 111.222.49.100 - 111.222.49.254

ie.
Server1
Server2
Domain1

All of the "Server1" shares currently work fine within
the combination of Win98 SE and XP Pro workstations.

Now I've added a 2nd server, "Server2", the new server
has been added to the Domain and the Active Directory is
currently working on the new server. However, only the
XP Pro machines can access the data and applications on
the new server. None of the Win98 boxes have access to
the new server's HD or Directories. When I try to
access the new server, through Network places or
neighborhood to add a shared folder or drive
from "Server2" I receive a message asking for a password
for IPC$ on the new server. ( \\SERVER2\IPC$ ) I have
no folder/directory(s) or drives showing for that new
server in the network listing, only the message requiring
a password. As the administrator, neither server has any
special rights needed between them. they use the same
Active Directory Service. Only one A/D shows... Same
user/group list is seen for both servers.

What is needed to be able to access the 2nd server on my
win98 machines??? (Upgrading all computers to XP Pro is
not currently in the plans.)

Thanks in advance for your assistance!

Jim

Boy, you've got me stumped on this one. The only thing I can think of is
that your addressing scheme is not a private addressing scheme and I wonder
if you're getting conflicts with a "real" IP address out there in the real
world.

I don't think it's the addressing scheme... Here's a new
twist I've discovered.
I found that I could log on to any of the Win98 Wkstn and
log on as "Administrator" and access anything I either
Server1 or Server2. >> Now it gets interesting << I
tried a test of dupplicating myself as "Administrator" in
the A/D of Server1 as one of my partners name, (also
reccognised in Server2's A/D, just like it should.) Now
in theory they should be be able to log on to their Wkstn
using their new user ID and have the same rights and
abilities as I do, you would think... Not so! They
still could not access the 2nd server. the message is
Can not log on to \\Server2\ICP$ {Prompt for P/W}

None of the p/w's I've used when setting up either server
works at this prompt. (For anyone on Win98... but yet
WinXP doesn't have these problems.) What could be missing
in the A/D that would allow me to use Win98 as a Admin,
but not as a copy of the same Admin user ID in the Domain
A/D?

Confused??? ME Too!

You have me stumped at this point, and I have a pretty hefty little AD
domain I run at work. The only thing I can think of at this point, and it's
a real stretch, is that somehow the security settings for Server2 are not
right in AD. If it has a name a previous workstation had and wasn't removed
from AD first, or if you have a serious failure in your DNS schema, you
would see extremely weird problems like this. I'd suspect (but can't bet
on) the fact that XP can 'see' Server2 through NetBIOS name resolution
maybe.

Have you checked your event logs on both servers to see if there are
problems replicating AD from one server to the other? Or the DNS log to see
if there's a refused dynamic update from Server2 to the DNS server?

David:

Do you have the Directory Service Client for Windows 98
installed on that machine?

Which machine on the network is the Master Browser? In
reality, both DCs should be Master Browsers by default.

Are you login onto the NT Domain with the W98 machine? You
stated that you logged onto the W98 machines and logon as
administrator, are you saying you are loggin on as Domain
Administrator?
