a windows 2003 server in my domain has stopped being able to browse the
network.

if i click on "my network places", then "entire network" then double click
on our domain name, i get an error

---------
microsoft windows network
domain_name is not accessible. you might not have permission to use this
network resource. contact the administrator of this server to find out if you
have access permissions.

the list of servers for this workgroup is not currently available
----------

at the command prompt if i do "net view"
then:
-----------
system error 6118 has occurred.

the list of servers for this workgroup is not currently available
-----------

browstat status
----------
status for domain domain_name on transport
\Device\NetBT_Tcpip{45ED36FE-FC77-46EB-8B3A-D5F7E47911E0}
browsing is NOT active on domain. statsus: 6118
master name cannot be determined from GetAdapterStatsus
----------

it was working when i originally set it up, and it's still part of the
domain, but as it doesn't appear when i do a "net view" from another computer
in the domain then i can't setup my backup software to back it up

any help would be appreciated
regards
andrew

Do you use WINS for your domain? On at least one computer in each subnet,
is the Computer Browser service turned on? Is NetBIOS over TCP/IP enabled?
Is the server service and File and Print sharing for MS networks turned
enabled on the computers you are looking for in Network Places? Is there
any firewall software in place on any of these computers blocking the
NetBIOS ports 137, 138, 139? Finally, refer to KB article 281648 which
discusses how SMB-signing could be an issue at play here.

Reinstall the tcp/ip protocol and see if this resolves your
issue. You have to go into the properties of the connection
and uncheck tcp/ip then go back in and recheck it. Does
this fix your issue?

hi Todd,

we do have WINS, but it's only for legacy computers, enabling it made no
difference.
the computer browser service is turned on, on more than one computer in the
subnet, none of my other servers or workstations have this problem
netbios over tcp/ip is enabled
there is no firewall software in place and the windows firewall is not
turned on
i had a look at that article, it mostly seemed to be about problems joining
a domain, in particular an older domain. our domain is windows 2003 and the
machine is already successfully joined to the domain and was working.
you can still do start-run and put in \\machine name to browse to or from
it, or do net view \\machine_name at the prompt, but it just doesn't appear
in the list of machines on the domain when browsing from my network places

Hi Pez,

Thanks for posting here. Also thanks for Todd and Michael's kindly replies.

Based on my experience, you may test the following steps for this issue:

1. Stop and re-start Computer Browser service with services.msc or use:
net stop browser
net start browser
2. Disable Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) service with
services.msc.
3. Restart the server.
4. If the issue persists after above steps, please refer to the following
KB article for further troubleshooting:

Troubleshooting the Microsoft Computer Browser Service
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/188305/

Hope this helps!

Have a nice day!

thanks Tom,
thanks for the suggestion, here's my results.
i stopped and started the browser service, didn't have to disable the
firewall service as it already was, restarted the server, same problem
worked my way through that article:
the pdc is the master browser, and is on the same network segment as the
misbehaving server. i can map network between the misbehaving server, the pdc
and another computer.
from step 2.
the master browser doesn't have the server's name in it's list. forcing an
announcement from another computer, and doing an announcement from the
console of the missing server's console had no effect. the announce from the
console said: "toggling local server status bits to 20000 and then to 20000."
but it still didn't appear in the list.
from step 3.
the master browser is the pdc, so running browstat getpdc.... just returned
the name of the pdc, it worked from another pc, interestingly when run from
the missing server it said: "unable to get PDC: access is denied"
from step 6.
the browstat locallist command returned no entries, but when i did the
browstat view... |findstr /i bbr it returned a list of backup browsers, none
of which have the missing server in their list

this server is one of our exchange servers, so removing it and re-adding it
to the domain will be a problem i think

Go into the AD and reset the computer account for the
Exchange server.

Out of curiosity.. Open a dos prompt on the Exchange
server and run Ipconfig /all
What is the NetBIOS node type?

Hi Andrew,

Thanks for your update.

This is a really weird issue, but is there any firewall software or
security software installed on the problematic server? Such as TREND MICRO
PCCillin or Norton Internet Security. Because I have found out some
similar known issues were caused by them. You may try to temporarily
uninstall them for a test.

You may also boot the server into the Safe Mode with Networking to
eliminate third-party interference:
a. After the Power On Self Test (POST), press F8.
b. On the Windows Advanced Options Menu screen, use the ARROW keys to
select Safe Mode with Networking, and then press ENTER.

I also recommend you may uninstall and re-install File and Printer Sharing
for Microsoft Networks and Client for Microsoft Networks, and then restart
computer for a test.

Have you tried netdiag /test:browser /v? What is the result?

Furthermore, I also saw a similar issue was caused by a corrupted NIC...

Hope this helps.

Have a nice day!

Sincerely,
Tom Che
