My WinXP machine shows up in Network Neighborhood on my
Win98SE machine and the folders I've shared also show
correctly, however, when I click on any of the shared
folders I get a message with the path saying "not
accessible" "not enough memory is available - quit some
programs". I have closed all programs and firewalls and
still get this message. This did NOT occur when the WinXP
machine was also running Win98SE last week before I
upgraded the OS. Also, I am able to access shared folders
on the Win98 machine from the WinXP machine without a
problem. Thanks for any help!

Rather than re-type all this, here's Steve Winograd's advice on the subject
that generally fixes up such problems:

*****
1. Permanently disable XP's built-in Internet Connection Firewall on
local area network connections -- it's for use only on a direct modem
connection to the Internet. Disable and un-install all other
firewalls while troubleshooting. Details here:

Windows XP Internet Connection Firewall
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/...c_firewall.htm

2. Use only one protocol for File and Printer Sharing. If the network
needs more than one protocol, unbind File and Printer Sharing from all
but one of them. Details here:

Windows XP Network Protocols
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/..._protocols.htm

3. Make sure that NetBIOS over TCP/IP is enabled on all computers.
Details here:

Enable NetBIOS Over TCP/IP (NetBT)

The problem is probably that an antivirus program has changed an
obscure TCP/IP setting. Please see this Microsoft Knowledge Base
article for a likely solution, specifying a value of 15 for
IRPStackSize on the XP computer:

WHOOPS. Didn't read far enough. Thanks for catching that.
