we need more information to help. Have you enabled firewall?

Hi Robert,

Thanks for your response. This is a new installed server 2003 R2. I did not
enable any firewall. I was able to access the shares on the server before i
updated the server with the security updates . I have a feeling that the
updates restricted access to the server.

Best Regards

on the server, type net share command. that should display the share drives. On the remote computer, type net use \\serverip. If it asks for the user name, type the administrator with the server password. Otherwise, you may receive system error 53. post back with the result.

When i type net use \\serverip, i have a suuceesfull response, But when i
type the net use \\servername i have message that the operation cannot be
completed. I discovered that it is a DNS problem cause when i add an entry(
server 2003) to the host file on the workstation ( xp pro) i have no problem
issuing a net use \\servername or connecting to shares. The actual network
had a 2000 server (workgroup mode) running DNS and DHCP. I think since there
in no domain on that network the DNS function is not valid ( checked content
had no valid local domain, with out of scope ip addresses). Each workstaion
that's using the DHCP server gets the server 2000 as primary DNS server in
addition to the ISP Dns servers. I configured the Server 2003 as a workgroup
server with its static ip address and the server 2000 as primary DNS server
in addition to the Isp DNS servers. ( when i installed the server 2003 i did
no go through the role configuration. I am new to windows server 2003 am i
missing something in the installation process ?

Thanks.

Is there an entry in DNS for the W2003 server? What happens if you type
nslookup servername instead of net use \\servername ?
