Hi,
When I (client) am connected to the VPN (I am having problems setting it up)
I cann't ping the static IP but I can ping all the internal IP's on the LAN
(The lan that the server is on) I am sure that this is not right.

Any idea why that might be and how can i solve this problem.
Cheers

Lenny,

The IP you are pinging, might not respond to ping requests - favouring
to drop ICMP packets instead. It could be perfectly normal.

Ping which static IP? The IP of the VPN server or your own client IP?

Our VPN server (basic W2k Server jobbie) isn't set up to allow external
routing, and therefore we have to disable the "Use gateway on remote
network" in the Network->TCP/IP Settings->Advanced box (basic W2k/XP PPTP
VPN settings). If we have it enabled, then when we connect to the VPN, the
client machine cannot see the Internet but can only see the machines in the
corporate lan. Disabling the "Use gateway on remote network" means the
client can see the Internet AND the corporate lan.

May be that issue.

So when I am trying to connect to the server using a program that has a HTTP
link on my desk top should the 'target' ip be the internal ip of the
server,10.0.0.6, or the static IP given by the internet provider but I am
unable to ping?

Okay....

You have a server which is on the VPN lan with IP 10.0.0.6 but also has a
static, public IP. When you connect to the VPN, you can no longer
ping/access that public static IP.

When you're connected to the VPN, are you able to access any sites on the
internet (not just the server you specified)?

If you're able to access the required server by using the internal IP of
10.0.0.6, but can't on the public IP, then just use the internal IP whilst
connected to the VPN.

What VPN server software are you using, and what client software are you
using?

Thanks

D

Via the VPN - the internal 10.0.0.6 address, the same as you would use from
any of the other machines on the network side of your router/firewall/NAT
device.

OK, I am going to give up with the Zoom Router, take it back and get another
type. I can ping the 10.0.0.6 through the VPN with the wireless Origo router
bought from E-buyer straight away but not at all with the Zoom. Their help
desk seem to think that the only thing that it can be is that both router
ip's are the same ie 10.0.0.2 but they are also the same with the E-buyer
router!

Also when I look at the properties of the VPN connection it gives the server
and client it's own ip anyway. For example, although I have set up the
server as 10.0.0.6 the VPN says that it is 10.0.0.8 but I can't ping the .8
number but can .6, if you know what I mean.

Anyway if it is normal to not be able to ping the static IP (external) then
I am going to just change the router and see what happens.

Thanks for the help. I am sure I will be back.

Cheers
