I recently installed a D- LINK DI-524 router on my desk top to allow
wireless connection with a new lap top I purchased. My account in my desktop
is the"administrator" account. However, when I try and set sharing of the
folder I cannot see the "permission button or the "Security" tab.

Also, how do you set sharing a printer.

To see the Security tab:

a. The drive must be NTFS
b. In Folder Options - View, uncheck 'Use Simple File Sharing'. This is
only available in XP Pro in Regular Mode. If "a." is true and you have
XP Home, you must go into Safe Mode.

To set sharing on a printer, right-click it and choose "Sharing".

The easiest way to create a home network is to run the Network Setup
Wizard on both machines, making sure to enable File & Printer Sharing,
and rebooting afterwards. The only "gotcha" is that this will turn on
the XPSP2 Windows Firewall. If you aren't running a third-party
firewall or have an antivirus with "Internet Worm Protection" (like
Norton 2005/06) which acts as a firewall, then you're fine. If you have
third-party firewall software, configure it to allow the Local Area
Network traffic as trusted. I usually do this with my firewalls with an
IP range. Ex. would be 192.168.1.0-192.168.1.254. Obviously you would
substitute your correct subnet.

Then create shares as desired. XP Home does not permit sharing of users'
home directories (My Documents) or Program Files, but you can share
folders inside those directories. A better choice is to simply use the
Shared Documents folder.

If that doesn't work for you, here is an excellent network
troubleshooter by MVP Hans-Georg Michna. Take the time to go through it
and it will usually pinpoint the problem area(s) -

Malke,

Just wanted to say "thanks" for the troubleshooting link you provided. I
was having trouble with a mixed (wifi and wired) LAN...The computers would
"see" each other for a short time after running network setup wiz, but then
the connection would disintegrate. Turns out my laptop had p-node enabled in
NetBIOS, and would only look for WINS servers, of which my network has none.
Also, my desktop had IEEE 802.1x authentication enabled, further hindering
success. Anyway, the troubleshooter was fantastic and easy to follow, and I
might never have found the problems without it. Thanks again, I have been
trying to figure this out all week so I don't have to use a flash drive every
time I want to print something. I definitely recommend this one!

MALKE,

Thanks for help, I have resolved the security permission problem. However,

I am able to view shared files on my laptop when I try and access these
files I get the following message

"filename" no accessable. you might not have permission to use this network
resource. Contact the administratorof thsi server to find out if you have
access permissions. The network path was not found.

Also, When I view workgrpoup I receive the following message
"Mshome is not accessable. you might not hav ethe permission to use the
network resource. Contact the administratorof thsi server to find out if you
have access permissions. The list of servers for this workgroup is not
currently available.
