It can take up to 15 minutes after a computer starts up before network browsing works. During that time, you should be able to access another computer by typing the other computer's name in the Start | Run box preceded by two backslash characters: \\computer If that doesn't work, a common reason for inability to browse the network is that the user isn't logged on. Is there a logon prompt when Windows 98 starts? If so, don't cancel it. Complete the logon by entering a user name and, optionally, a password. If there's no logon prompt, click Start | Log Off or Start | Shut Down | Close all programs... and log back on. If that makes network browsing work properly, the most likely fix is to go to this registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\ Network\Real Mode Net and delete the value named "AutoLogon", as shown here: http://www.wown.com/j_helmig/nologon.htm#AutoLogon -- Best Wishes, Steve Winograd, MS-MVP (Windows Networking) Please post any reply as a follow-up message in the news group for everyone to see. I'm sorry, but I don't answer questions addressed directly to me in E-mail or news groups. I am still in trouble.
The 98 machine connects to a Netgear router through a Netgear wireless card. On the 98 machine in Windows Explorer I can select Network Neighborhood in the left pane and see my XP machine listed in the right pane but I do not see my 98 machine. When I right click on the Network Neighborhood in the left pane and select Find Computer I can search for the 98 machine and it is found with the correct folders shared. A similar search on the XP machine does not find the 98 machine. I have tried to follow your Tip #1 instructions and have had the following points of confusion. 1. In step 6 for the TCP/IP BINDING Advanced tab I do not see the "Allow Binding to ATM" as a choice. If this is referring to a cash ATM, perhaps Microsoft removed this choice during a security patch. 2. In step 7 I am to uncheck the "I want to enable NetBIOS over IPX/SPX" box unless I am connecting to an XP machine. I am connecting to a router but this router does connect to an XP machine. I believe this box should be unchecked but I am not sure. 3. In step 15, I am unable to follow the instructions. When you say "double-click My Network Places" I assume you are talking about the left pane of Window Explorer and the I should double-click on "Network Neighborhood". The next instuction about VIEW THE ENTIRE CONTENTS OF THIS FOLDER and HIDE THE CONTENTS OF THIS FOLDER, do not match any choices I have guessed at. Thanks for your help so far, I hope you will be able to spot my error. >-----Original Message----- >Follow the instructions offered in the link I sent previously. > > ><(E-Mail Removed)> wrote in message >news:7a1001c3e7a9$0f9f6720$(E-Mail Removed)... >> >> >-----Original Message----- >> >In article <64e401c3e61c$6bb96210 >> $(E-Mail Removed)>, "Paul" >> ><(E-Mail Removed)> wrote: >> >>I have a new Dell computer running XP wired to a >> Netgear >> >>router and an old Dell computer running 98 with a >> Netgear >> >>wireless card. I believe this box should be unchecked but I am not sure." You are not trying to connect to the router, you are trying to connect to XP. Therefore, this setting must be checked. The router is something you connect to, it's something you connect THROUGH. I am still having no luck. On both machine (XP and 98) I
can see the workgroup in my Entire Network. In this workgroup I can only see the XP machine. If I right click on Network Neighborhood and select find computer it does find the 98 machine when asked. >-----Original Message----- >"2.
