Cannot share files or printers

When I right click on the folder or printer and select sharing, I get an "red
x" error window that says "Windows cannot retrieve access control list for
this resource" Then I click OK and the properties box opens up and allows
me to enter a "shared as" name. When I click OK I get another "red x" error
window. This one says "you have created a shared resource, but have not
given anyone permission to use it. Do you want to add user permissions now?
If I click no, the window closes and the hand shows up on the folder icon to
indicate sharing. If I click yes an Add Users box opens up with "The world"
as the only user listed. When I try to add "the world," and click OK, OK,
another "red X" error box opens up and says "An error occured while trying to
set the Access Control List for this resource. Error 2227. Access Control
List may not be modified. One more tidbit that I think is related. When I
go into Control Panel and click Passwords, I get "blue screen" that says "a
fatal exception OE has occurred at 0028:C153E8D5 in VXD VSERVER (01) +
00007EA5. The current application will be terminated." Then I can press any
key and continue to work. I am running Windows 98 SE with all the updates on
a Compaq Presario 5452. I have a "power-on" setup, too. Any ideas?

Somewhere in the (control panel -> network) settings you can select
share level access instead of user level access.

Win98 on its own cannot provide a user list so unless you have a
machine on the network which can (eg winnt, win2k or samba server) you
must use share level sharing and not user level.

Thanks for this reply, but the problem must be something else as I already
have "share-level access control" selected. Could I have a corrupt file
associated with my "access control list?"

Win98 can't provide an access control list for itself. It's most
likely a registry corruption of some sort. Try removing the file and
printer sharing service, rebooting and adding it back again from the
cd. It's share level access by default so hopefully that will correct
the problem.
