Cannot send email attachements

I believe my router is blocking email attachments over 10k. I'm using a
SMC 7004ABR router with a Modem Blaster external dial-up modem on a XP Home
PC. I've connected the modem directly to the PC and don't have the
problem, only when the modem is connected to the router. I can send and
receive files via ftp, newsgroups and web all day (and night) long without
any problems. Only when I try and send a large email attachment will it
hang. At around 10k the router stops sending and after 20 minutes my dial-
up times out for inactivity. I've updated everything with the latest
drivers, firmware and software without any benefit. Any ideals?
