Cannot see Win98 computer on mixed XP/98 network

I have a small home network with two Windows XP Pro computers and one
Windows 98 SE computer (there are no Win2K or XP drivers available for some
of the hardware, so it has not been upgraded). The configuration has
basically been the same for the past three years and I have had no problems
until recently. Now I suddenly find that the Win 98 computer does not see
the XP computers displayed in Network Neighborhood, nor do the XP computers
see the Win 98 computer. There is no problem with the two XP computers
seeing each other. Additionally, in Windows Explorer the Win 98 computer
does not see shared folders on the XP computers, although the XP computers
see the shared folders of the Win 98 computer as well as on the other XP
computer. There is also a shared printer attached to the Win 98 computer,
and no problems with any of the XP computers seeing or printing to it.

File sharing (and printer sharing for the Win 98 computer) is enabled on all
machines and the appropriate folders are flagged as shareable. I have
tried disabling the Windows XP firewall on those computers, but it does not
make any difference.

Is there something I am missing or that may have changed? Any help would be
appreciated.

On the XP machine enable NETBIOS over TCP/IP. NETBIOS is enable on 98 by
default, in fact you can't turn it off even if you wanted to without
entering the registry, and it's disabled on XP by default.

That was a good suggestion, but unfortunately NETBIOS over TCP/IP is already
enabled on the XP computers.

You have no other firewall or antivirus software installed that could be
causing the problem? If you have another firewall installed is it
configured correctly to allow the 98 machines IP address to use an
unsolicited inbound connection?
What, if anything, happened recently that might have altered your
configuration? Not really enough info given except everything worked fine
up until recently. Viruses, spyware and many programs that are not
malicious hook the TCP/IP stack and if removed corrupt it. Often you have
to rebuild the TCP/IP stack.

One thing I often do if I notice something wrong is do a search for all
files created then another search for all files modified on the day in
question and look for anything out of the ordinary. For instance, if you
did not install anything and there's an odd .exe file you've never seen
before.
