Hi,

I'm just setting up a server at our company. I'm not horribly knowledgable
about this stuff.

I'm running windows server 2003 standard edition on a dell poweredge 830.
It's acting only as a file server as part of the Mshome workgroup. It's not
serving applications.

All of other functions are provided by our telephone/internet provider as
far as routing, etc etc.

The problem I'm having is that the server is not visible within the Mshome
list of computers connected to the network. It was at one time until I
started to add more shared folders on the server.

By way of some shortcuts that were created in the beginning, I am able to
access the server and it's working fine. I just can't get to it via MShome.

I've installed no CAL's since that seems to be only for Terminal server apps
which is not how I'm running.

I'd appreciate it if anybody could just give me a few brief suggesions on
where to look for solutions.

Thanks, Dana

Do you receive any system errors if you use "net view \\servername" command? If yes, this step by step troubleshooting may help,

troubleshooting is not accessible error Troubleshooting "... is not accessible" error step by step. When try to access a remote computer, you may receive the following error messages: ...

Bob,

After some thought it really doesn't seem important to see the server listed in Mshome.

Users can access it my using \\Server when trying to open files. And from there they can create Shortcuts to folders etc.

So it's not perfect but I have more urgent things to be working on.

Thanks!
