I have a Linksys 4 port wireless router. As far as getting both desktop and
laptop PC's on the Internet, everything works awesome. No problems there,
however, there are document I have on the desktop I would like to bring over
to the laptop, BUT therein comes the problem.
I cannot see the other computer on the network. I have tried tons of stuff,
but cannot get the LAN to work right. Any suggestions anyone has run
across, any ideas on what I am doing wrong?
Thanks in advance!
I have always had good luck with this group, hopefully you can save me
again!

The laptop has XP home (hate it) and the Desktop has XP Pro.
I have enabled MAC Address' auth. for my laptop, so my network is somewhat
secure.

Do you have the personal firewall enabled on these machines? Need to turn
it off and use the one in the router.

You need to have NetBIOS added to your network protocol properties on both
machines for all computers on a network to communicate with each other.
Without NetBIOS they will all access the Internet just fine, but won't see
each other.

Yes, XP's ICF must be disabled, since ICF inhibits sharing files and
printers. But note that that router's firewall is only for inbound
traffic, and does not help with outbound traffic (trojans, spyware, etc.).
I suggest that you also use a firewall on each PC; ZoneLabs.com has
some, including one freebie. Also, it would be a good idea to use
a traditional AntiVirus app and a separate spyware detector.
Back to your non-contact complaint -- You should use DHCP, by enabling
the router's DHCP server and setting each PC to be a DHCP client; you
can check that each PC winds up in the same IP subnet (for IPA=a.b.c.d,
each PC should typically have the same a.b.c and a unique d). Then
check that each PC has the same workgroup name and a unique computer
name. Check that all PCs use the same network protocol(s): best bet
for most home LANs is to only use TCP/IP (not NetBEUI and not IPX/SPX);
check that NetBIOS is enabled over TCP/IP. Check that both PCs have
both F&P Sharing and ClientForM$nets enabled. Check that each PC has
a shared non-root folder with a short simple foldername and a short
simple sharename, and check that all users have full access rights to
those shared folders. Then, for starters, use identical credentials
(username & PW) on both PCs.
If still no joy, check that PINGing works: you should be able to
PING from each PC to the other PC, using both ping-by-number and
ping-by-name; if ping-by-number works but ping-by-name fails, you
have a Domain Name translation problem and you should check your
DNS params.
