Server = Windows 2000
Client = Windows XP
Connection= hi-speed cable, VPN

I can connect to my VPN at work no problem but when I go to my Network
Places, I can't see anything except for the machine that I connected with
(XP). When I change the workgroup name of the xp client to that of the
domain controller for the VPN, I can see the computers. I don't want to
change my workgroup name to that of my VPN domain controller. Should I be
writing a host or lmhost file to help me with this? I"m hoping someone can
steer me in the right direction.

Thanks.

Hi Clement,

Make sure that the VPN connection is set to use the domain's DNS servers in
the VPN connection's TCP/IP configuration settings. That should get you
name resolution to the remote network.

However it may not populate in your Network Neighborhood until after you've
specifically connected to the remote hosts by name directly.

Your HOSTS and LMHOSTS files will probably not be much help.

To see the browse list of the remote network ( the NN display is built
from the browse list) your workgroup name will have to match the remote
domain name.

The client gets the browse list by connecting the the domain master
browser. It finds the domain master browser through its special name
<domainname 1B> . If the client machine doesn't have the correct name for
"domainname" it can't find the DMB to get the browse list.

You might be able to get it to work if you had an LMHOSTS file with an
entry for "domainname 1B" ie the domain name plus blank fill plus
Netbios special 16th character 1B .
