Hello,
I have an access point at home; I am able to see it by scanning from
one machine, but I am not able to see it from another nearby machine.
I had put the two machines and the access point in the same room but
it did not help. I can see other access points (of nearby appartments)
by scanning from both machines.
I perform the scan by : "iwlist wlan0 scan".
What can be the reason ?
I am scanning with the same physical wireless nic.
I simply take it from one machine and plug it into the other. I had
also tried with a different
wireless from a different vendor (from Ralink) and got the same
problem.

any ideas?

Rgs,
Mark

The iwconfig can be set up differently. For example if you set the ESSID
iwlist will only list that ESSID.
Also, it must be run by root.

man iwlist
Triggering scanning is a privileged operation (root only) and
normal users can only read left-over scan results.

Make sure, that the interface is up and the RF stage of the
module enabled.

ip link set $wlandev up
iwconfig $wlandev txpower auto

Also make sure, that the hardware RF switch (if present) is set
to on.
