Greetings,

I'm at a loss with this :
Linux REDHAT 9
PROftpd 1.2.9

installed on two machines,
run on one not on the other (let's call her B).

Same proftpd.conf file
/etc/host identical
resolv.conf identical

B can be accessed via ssh, can access the web, be pinged with her name
or her ip from herself or from another machine on the lan.

/init.d/proftpd start gives :

Starting proftpd: - getaddrinfo 'hermes_lan.com' error: Name or service
not known
- error: unable to determine IP address of 'hermes_lan.com'
- error: no valid servers configured
- Fatal: error processing configuration file '/etc/proftpd.conf'

I've checked and googled but to no avail :

I have forgotten something but cannot find what

any help appreciated !!

Are you expecting hermes_lan.com to be a private address? If so, then
you need to redesign your DNS, as .com address should never be used for
internal networks that aren't visible from the internet. Use a domain
like localdomain instead.

If you are expecting hermes_lan.com to be a valid internet-visible name,
then perhaps its no longer valid (not kept up to date so removed),
because its not visible to me at least.

I named my domain lan.com, and it is not supposed to be seen from
outside my lan. Moreover, the ftp server works on my other linux box.

Same distro, same ftp server, that's the weirdest thing...

What could I troubleshoot ?
(did etc/hosts,etec/proftpd.conf already..)

Recheck /etc/hosts {is that name in two lines now? most-common 'oops'}
See also /etc/resolv.conf and /etc/nisswitch.conf on good v. bad boxes.

Recheck both files : they're ok
Hermes is as you have guessed, the machine's name.

127.0.0.1 Hermes.lan.com localhost.lan.com localhost
10.0.0.3 Hermes.lan.com Hermes
10.0.0.2 venus.lan.com venus

venus is another machine on the lan

resolv.conf is okay since I can surf so dns is ok...

Really, I do not see what's wrong : I've copied the hosts file from
another box which run smoothly and modified the machine name....

Maybe drop proftpd and install another ftp server (but I think the
problem lies elsewhere )

Any ideas, suggestions most welcome
