Cannot read mail fetched with fetchmail.

I have fetchmail collecting mail, and have set up Kmail to read it. When I
try to connect with Kmail, I get a message "Transmission failed. Could not
lock /var/spool/mail/doug." I have tried creating a lockfile with "touch".

What am I missing?

Doug.

Creating a lockfile will not help. Unless something is still processing
mail, you need to remove the stale lockfile (in /var/spool/mail ?).

Does fetchmail hand it off to your local smtp daemon, or dumping it right
to a file?

There doesn't seem to be a lockfile. Mutt mumbled something about a
lockfile then read the mail. Evolution can read the mail without any
problems, but kmail still gives the same message. It is either something
to do with kmail, or something in my setup. Fetchmail sends mail to a mbox
file as /var/spool/mail/doug. I don't have a network, but wanted to use
fetchmail as a temporary expedient until the torrent of viruses dies down.
The peak was over 3 000 a day, but it seems to be down to 2 400. Others
are also experiencing a decline.
