Cannot Ping New Windows Server 2003 Machine from XP Client

I have just set up a server (obviously incorrectly) with Windows Server 2003
R2, but cannot map to any of the drives that I have shared.

I have fixed the IP address as 192.168.0.24 and my client PC (running XP Pro
SP2) is 192.168.0.1 (it has ICS enabled).

From my server, I can ping the client PC by name and address, but the client
cannot ping the server by name or address.

Is there anything obvious that I should be looking for here? The server can
happily get out to the internet via my client PC gateway, so there is
clearly some communication going on.

TIA

Charles

I would check the firewall first.

Hi Robert

Thanks for the quick reply. I had Windows Firewall enabled on the server, so
I disabled it and I can now ping the server and map shared drives. Does this
mean that I can't enable Windows Firewall on the server, or do I have to do
it in a particular way?

One other thing, the server cannot "see" shared drives on my client PC
because of the messages

"The trust relationship failed"

and when I retry

"There are currently no logon servers to service the logon request"

Any idea why this should be? It's not the end of the world, as I don't
really intend to have the server map drives on my client PC, but I just
wonder why I get this error.

Thanks again.

Charles

Hi Robert

I have tried those links but everything after xpicf1.htm (i.e. xpicf2.htm etc.) comes up blank. Anyway, I have found it from Google's cache.

Thanks again.
