Cannot ping but can wget or browse.

Hello:
Cannot ping (no reply) nor traceroute a website, but wget gets me the
index.html file.
Furthermore browser (firefox) access just work!
This is strange: could you explain why?

Are you behind a firewall?

Yes you must be using firewall... If you got root access then type
iptables -L to see rules

It could be even external firewall also

You have not said if the website is on a internet connection you control
or not.

There is nothing that says an IP is required to respond to ping or
traceroute. Some hosts have that disabled to minimize DOS attacks and Win
worms that ping to find hosts to attack. Or it is possible that your
firewall is blocking it (if you cannot ping anything on internet).
Nothing to worry about as long as the site works.
