Cannot map drive

Hi all. I wonder if someone could answer this problem I have because I have
spent hours trying to solve it and I cannot.

First of all I am networking my Dell Dimension with my Toshiba Tecra 8100
Laptop with a network cable. Here is the configuration:

Dell Dimension 2400 Desktop with Windows XP Home Edition, using the Dell
Onboard Network Socket.

Toshiba Tecra 8100 Laptop with Windows ME, using a PC Line PCMCIA Card
bought from PC World. Both are now joined up with network cable.

The stage I am at is that I can use Internet Connection Sharing and use both
Desktop PC & Laptop at the same time to surf the net (56k Dial Up
Connection) and I can also map the Toshiba Laptops C: Drive through 'my
computer' on the DELL Desktop and see my Toshiba C: drive and its files with
no problems and I can also change an delete files OK.

The problem what I am having and what I am trying to fathom out is that I am
trying to see the Dell Dimension's Desktop Drive c: on my Toshiba laptop. So
I go into 'my computer' in Windows ME on the Toshiba laptop and I click Map
Network Drive and assign letter Z: \\Dell\80gb C: and then the Laptop
keeps asking me for a Microsoft Network Password and says it must have a
password to access the dell drive - thing is I have never ever set a
Microsoft Networking Password and if I use blank it wont let me on and I
have tried other numerous passwords and it still wont let me map the drive.

I have Shared the c: drive on the Dell Desktop and there are no passwords
set on the desktop for logging into windows and I haven't password protected
any of the files or folders on the Dell Desktop so why on earth cant I map
the Desktop c: drive through the Toshiba? - Anyone got any Ideas?

On another note though I got hold of a couple of Belkin 802.11g USB wireless
adaptors put one on my Dell Desktop and put the other on my Toshiba Laptop
set them up and I could map the drives both ways fine without having to put
in any network passwords or anything. I want to try and do the same going
the cable way but its only working one way with the Dell being able to read
the Toshiba laptop C: drive but the Laptop wont read the Dell C: drive.

Can anyone shed any light or know where to find the Microsoft Network's
password its looking for please?

Many thanks.

Andy.

That's part of XP security, the straightforward method is to use the
same user name/password to log on to both machines and you will be in
business.

XP won't let you have access to shares without a password. I think
there is an option in XP Home for simple file sharing but I've not used
it.

Thanks for your reply. I see you say that its part of the XP Home security
but if that's the case I am wondering why I can map the Dell XP Hard drive
when I go the wi-fi way without having to use usernames & passwords but I
cant map Dells hard drive through the Toshiba laptop when I go networking
cable way?

I will try seeing if I can enable simple file sharing and see if that works,
although I thought simple file sharing was only available on XP Pro. ?

Have to pass on that, seems odd though.

It's an option in Pro but, I think, the norm in Home - I haven't got an
XP Home machine to test with.

I have tried using same username and password on both computers and it still
says the password is not recognised for microsoft networking. The change
other passwords in control panel is grayed out and cannot be selected. Both
laptop and Desktop are configured to FAT32 if that has any influence on
things. Laptop has ME Desktop has XP Home.

Any other ideas please - anyone???

You may need to give the shared folder access to the Everyone group. This is
not good from a security point of view but with FAT32 this is not secure
anyway.

With XP Home you need to do this from Safe Mode (although there is a tweak
that can be applied but I have not tried it). Go into Safe Mode (press F8
during bootup). Select the shared folder and look at the Share permissions.
Add the Everyone Group to the list if not already there. This might solve
your problem. I have recently used this on an XP Home network where the
customer did not use passwords.

The tweak I mentioned can be found here
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/tips/xp_home_sectab.htm and
http://www.scottxp.com/winxp.php (with slightly enhanced instructions). This
link also shows screen shots of the display you should expect. I repeat, I
have not tried this yet - I need access to my wife's laptop while she is not
looking!

Thanks for the info. Tried that and still no joy it didn't work. I am
reckoning now that my problem might be with starting the Net Logon service
in my Windows XP Home because I start it and it stops in seconds saying its
got nothing to do! - I cannot seem to keep it started I must go and
investigate why.
