Cannot log in (using IE7 web browser) to configure my router. Please help!

I recently purchased and installed a (new) Buffalo Technologies model
WHR-G54S wireless router. I have it connected with an ethernet cable to my
desktop computer which is a Dell E510 with WINXP SP2. I followed the setup
instructions explicitly as provided on the CD wizard provided by Buffalo,
but when it came time to log in (using the defaut IP off 192.168.11.1) to
configure the router I was unable to log in. The login window came up and I
entered the default user and password, but my web browser (Internet Explorer
7) came up with the message "the web page cannot be displayed".

Well, I called their tech support and they asked me what web browser I was
using. When I told them IE7 they said that they have had some users
"experience problems" getting logged in with IE7. So they suggested that I
try connecting my laptop computer with an ethernet cable and log in with it.
My laptop is a new HP Pavilion DV2000. It has WINXP SP2 with all
updates--except I have NOT (thank goodness) installed the IE7 update. It
has IE6.

BING! On the laptop computer I was able to log in with no problems.

So I decided to roll back the web browser on my desktop computer to IE6,
but even after the rollback I still couldn't log in to access the router
configuration. I downloaded Firefox and even tried an older version (7.02)
of Netscape on my desktop but using any of those browsers I still can't log
in.
At least I can log in with the Notebook for now, so I was able to change the
default password, set up MAC filtering, enable WPA security, etc. And the
wireless internet also works fine on the laptop computer.

Any ideas why in the world I can't login from my desktop PC? Is it
something caused by the IE7 upgrade? Or maybe something totally unrelated
to IE7? I have BitDefender Anti-Virus Plus Version 10 running on both
computers. I tried disabling BitDefender on the desktop PC but it made no
difference.
Maybe Buffalo needs to come up with a firmware upgrade so their routers can
be configured with IE7.

NOTE: Please post replies to newsgroup. If you want to reply via email,
remove the "y" out of my email address (It is an anti-spam measure). Thank
you!

I had a similar problem when I try to access my routers admin page. It turn
out that I had a privacy setting in IE7 that was blocking cookies. I needed
to allow cookies for my routers IP address (192.168.11.1 in your case). In
IE7 if you go to the tools menu and click on internet options and then click
on the privacy tab and then click on the sites button you can add your
routers IP address to allow cookies.

Just notice you claim your routers defaut IP is 192.168.11.1. Maybe its a
typo but I think it should be 192.168.1.1

Not a typo. The default IP for the Buffalo router is 192.168.11.1.
Thanks for checking on that, though. I'm up for any and all suggestions to
figure this out!

Thanks for the suggestion. I went ahead and added my router's IP address to
the allowed cookies, saved the settings, then closed and reopened Internet
Explorer but I still get the same results (unable to log in).
After correctly entering the username and password IE just comes up
"Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage". Same old same old.
I wish that they had a forum on Buffalo Tech's website, but they don't.
They have a "Knowledge Base", but it is basically empty on wireless router
info:
http://www.buffalotech.com/knowledgebase/users/kb.php

Well, I guess I'll keep scratching away. Maybe eventually I'll figure it
out.

My sister has the same problem you are havening except she has a Motorola
SBG900 modem/router. She only has access to the router’s admin page via a
wireless connection, wired connections will not work. She talked to Motorola’s
tech support and they had her reset her browser back to the defaults, clear
browser cache, turn off all firewalls, popup blockers etc. Still didn’t
work. They replaced her SBG900 with a new one and it still didn’t fix the
problem. She called the maker of her computer, Dell, and they did a remote
access to her computer and try to fix the problem. No luck. She could’nt fix
the problem.

So…, if you find a solution please post it here, it may help others with the
same problem. Sorry I couldn’t offer any help.

Another poster just posted the same problem, but for a Linksys router.

Subject header "Linksys Router - Unable to Connect"

I believe it. I've tried all of those things, too (clearing browser cache,
turning off firewalls, etc.)
but to no avail.
If I go to the C:\ prompt (Start | Run | command.com) and ping 192.168.11.1
I am able to successfully
ping, so it sure seems strange that I can't log on using the web browser.
What seems even more strange is that the tech support people at Buffalo
Technologies can't figure it out.
I'll definitely post the solution if I figure it out!
