You shouldn't need an LMHOSTS file (or a hosts file for that matter).
Does the client have the correct DNS server address and the correct DNS
suffix? Can you resolve the LAN machines by name using nslookup? When this
works, you should be able to browse the LAN machines using net view
\\machineneme and map files using net use .
