hi all, ive installed a network card in to a windows 98
machine and i cannot get a ip address to come up all i get
is 0.0.0.0, and if i go into winipcfg the card doesn't
look like it's listed. ive tried reinstalling the card but
still no change, ive tried to fix the ip adress but still
comes up with 0.0.0.0

When you use winipcfg, I assume that on the pulldown menu on the top of
the screen that you did choose your network adapter. If you still get
0.0.0.0 you must have not set up the network adapter correctly in the
control panel, network page. Rereview that and make sure that you have
all the bindings and TCP set correctly.
Good luck.

I just had this problem myself. Some dll file probably became corrupted
and you have to reinstall the tcp/ip stack (see microsoft
knowledge base articles 181599 and 256986). The knowledge base
articles give you a tedious procedure which didn't work in my case
but I eventually did a reinstall of the operating system (without
the reformat to preserve the data files) and that did the trick.
Of course then you have to reinstall some of your programs. Pick
your poison....
