Hi All,

I've three machines. Machine1, with static IP address 188.168.1.152,
is installed with RH Linux 9.0; Machine2, with static IP address
188.168.1.154, is installed RH 7.1; Machine3, with dynamic IP address,
is installed with WinXP professional.

All the machines are in our corporate network.

The problem I encountered is as below,

1. From machine3,

ftp to machine1, always timed out. (ftp client is windows default one,
running on DOS prompt)
ssh to machine1, always hang there, no responding at all.
ping to machine1, no problem

On machine1, both sshd and vsftpd are running, security level is No
firewall. The named is not running. Network configuration should not
be a problem in machine1 as I can browse internet there.

2. From machine3,

ftp to machine2, no problem
ssh to machine2, no problem

3. From machine2,

ftp to machine1, no problem
ssh to machine1, no problem

Actually machine1 is a brand new machine and just installed RH 9.0.
All I have done with it is to run "neat". I did not touch any
configuration files manually. All the default files are used.

Can anyone help me to discover:

Why cannot I ftp/ssh from machine3 to machine1?

Regards,
Peter

Does anything show up in the machine1 logs when you attempt to connect
from machine3? If so, the error messages contained there (in
/var/log/messages and /var/log/security IIRC) should help you understand
whats going on. If there are no messages, then its likely that your
connection requests aren't making it to machine1 from machine3. I'd
start by tracing individual segments of your network in this case to
find the point at which the packets are lost.

HTH

Look into your /etc/hosts.deny and /etc/hosts.allow files on the Linux
clients.
