Well I didn't change anything, just left everything alone till
just now and it's working again. I posted the original message
via a freeserve dial-up but I could not ping my router even
though it displayed online status.

I reckon it's the router.

Sounds likely. Although, as you probably know, their news server is a bit
flakey. This wouldn't stop you getting a connection of course. I'd go with
your initial thought of the router, or modem (or both).

Yes! Same Bucks, dropped 11:30pm last night came back up just
after 7:00am this morning. I was unable to login with an
alternate modem, however the BT and Zen test login user/pass
accounts worked no problem.....

I was unable to authenticate between 23:20 and 02:28 - South East London.
Line was OK, router rebooted just in case.

A guy in the Zen newsgroup thought it might be BT's MTU upgrade (supposed to
take 2hours between 00:00 & 07:00). Maybe they mean GMT?

I'm not using their news server.

Good (in a manner of speaking) at least I know it's not my router
or system at fault.
