Cannot connect on unprotected wireless network

While visiting my mom, I switched on my laptop and the message popped up "wireless network
found". I discovered it is unprotected but, despite that, I could not make a connection
(it was just a try, no attempt to "steal" anything). For my knowledge, why does this
happen ??
Thanks,

Mike

Aloha Mike,

"Unprotected" just means they don't have WEP or WPA enabled. They might
have MAC filtering turned on.
