Cannot access workgroup computers

I have set up a wireless network between a desktopn and notebook. Although
the wirless network connection is created, and both devices are in the same
workgroup, I cannot see or access any resources across the connection.

Have tried enabling Netbios over TCP/IP, enabled guest accounts, but no joy.

I have disabled IPv6 and set notebook to IP 192.168.0.2. IPCONFIG /ALL now
looks cleaner

Am running XP Pro SP2, so not a Vista issue.

Still unable to "see" the computers when I select View Workgroup computers.
I have set up a ad-hoc network between the 2 computers.

Paul,

Look at the NetBT setting, and all personal firewalls. Make sure that NetBT is
consistent.

Thanks Chuck. Went through all the NetBT and FW settings - also disabled the
firewalls on both computers, but still can't see each other.

Hi Chuck - I tried this on both computers, both times got msg "Browsing not
active on the domain, master name cannot be determined from
GetAdapterStatus", and still no connection/visibility between the computers.
So have re-set it back on again.

I cannot ping from one computer to the other, so have been working through
the info on your site, but havent got it right yet.

I didn't even look at the layer 2 connectivity. How are PR-Home and PR-Notebook
actually connecting? With PR-Home and PR-Notebook both having manually assigned
IP addresses, I'll bet you don't have a router? Why not start from the
beginning, and tell us how you set them up.

Or read about using a cross-over cable, and substitute an "Ad-hoc WiFi
connection" for "cross-over cable".

OK. Got a new Dell D820, with wireless card. Thought it a good idea to
connect wirelessly to existing Dell GX270 desktop. Got a belkin wireless
card, which wasn't recognised as plug and play. Installed XP SP2 on desktop
to bring it in line with notebook. Got Netgear wireless card, also not
recognised as plug and play, got USB Netgear card, and installed correctly as
plug and play.

Then set up ad hoc network between the 2. Seemed quite simple, got the ad
hoc network going, both computers connect to the network automatically on
boot-up. I will get the settings I have used and post them on the weekend.

Am using your www to check some of the things. some of the basics are
right, like NetB over TCP/IP. Also have guest accounts activated.

Have been advised to use a router - as a more reliable approach than ad hoc
network.

Well, I second THAT advice. If a router is ever usable, I'd advise it in a
heartbeat. Using a router is a much better way to start. Using a router is a
way better to attack a connectivity problem.

So solve the connectivity issue first, we'll see what you get on the weekend.

Problem solved - one of your links was to a dated article on setting up an ad
hoc. I followed those steps, and found that when i did not use WEP on the
notebook, I could make a connection. Now file and print sharing, and
internet use, all works through the ad hoc network.

Thanks for all the links Chuck, as you say on your www, patience and careful
application eventually gets you there
