I just installed win2003 standard server and installed AD. When i want
to access my domain name using UNC , \\domain_name , it alert me that
it cannot be accessed and you might not have permission to access the
resource. Also i can't even ping it. Pls advise. Thanks

Assuming you can ping it by IP, I would check the DNS suffix search or WINS settings.

Also, there is a difference between the NetBIOS name of the server and the
NetBIOS name of the domain - not clear what you are trying to do. You
should be able to connect to the Fully Qualified Domain Name of the server -
eg.: \\server1.mydomain.com.

You only have access your DFS shares by the NetBIOS domain name,
\\NetBIOSDomain\SYSVOL and \\NetBIOSDomain\NETLOGON and the NetBIOS domain
name may not pingable if the parent domain is not in the DNS Suffix search
list. You need the TCP/IP NetBIOS helper service running to access DFS
Shares by the DNS name of the domain.

Do you mean DNS Suffix search list in the tcp/ip network properties ? i
only have netbios helper service running but no parent domain listed in
dns suffix search list and i can ping or use UNC access already.

You can only ping your NetBIOS domain only if its name falls in a DNS tree.

You cannot access your domain using the NetBIOS domain unless you are
accessing your DFS shares. E.g. \\NetBIOSDomain <no access unless there is a
DNS domain with a matching search list e.g. NetBIOSDomain.parentdomain.com
With parentdomain.com in the DNS suffix search list.
\\NetBIOSDomain\SYSVOL <yes you can access.

Yes it works. Does \\NetBIOSDomain\sysvol considered as DFS share ?
Thanks

Yes, as \\NetBIOSDomain\NETLOGON is also a DFS share and are replicated to
all Domain Controllers in the domain. You can open either of these shares,
right click, choose properties and select the Dfs tab to check the status of
the share on all Domain Controllers. Group Policies and logon scripts are in
these two DFS shares and is why the domain name must resolve to the IP
address on all DCs that have file sharing enabled. If you resolve the domain
name with nslookup and any IP address resolved is not on a DC and does not
have file sharing enabled, you will have a problem with Group Policies. This
is one of the reasons that multi-homed DCs are problematic.
