if i was to setup a basic (freeware) webserver on port 21 (FTP) would
it work ? would you be able to type the website address like the
following http://myip.com:21 in internet explorer ? i haven't been able
to get it to work. no router/firewalls running.
i know it will work on port 80/8080 but thats not my question its
whether it will work on port 21 and if no why not ?

You can run a webserver on any port you want. A browser should be
able to point to it using the syntax you showed. No idea why you're
having trouble.

Unless ftp is already running on 21.

check your httpd.conf file (if you're using apache). see which port
it's listening on and yes, make sure ftp is not using that port.

Your ISP may block port 21. Have you tried any other ports?

Also, in your example, if "myip" is your server's actual IP number,
then you shouldn't use the ".com" after it...

Maybe IE is getting confused. IE also works as an ftp client, maybe
it reserves port 21 for ftp protocol.
