Haven't got the contract to hand but does anyone know what the penalties are
to cancel an aol broadband contract? I am about 6 or 7 months into it and
it is a twelve month contract. If I just send them the modem back and block
payments are they likely to bother taking action?

There is always a way to buy yourself out of a contract. You may be
asked to pay the outstanding rental which forms the remainder of the
minimum term.

Why you would even consider just sending the modem back without
further payment escapes me - you entered into a contract with them -
so honour it.

A 'friend' at AOL tells me that they will make leaving as difficult as
possible. Their staff are well versed/trained in the art of 'persuading you
to stay with them.

What they will agree to is you paying a lump sum equal to the remaining
subscriptions on your contracted term... or at a push, they'll allow you to
end the broadband contract if you agree to take a years subscription to
their regular AOL dial-up service. Either way, it'll cost you dearly!

Shame AOL's cute 'n' cuddly image doesn't extend to their Cancellations
Dept, but then being nice wouldn't have allowed them to become the huge
global concern they are today.

Good luck
John

I cancelled just outside contract and had no problems leaving once we
established they did not support migration.

Their customer service was helpful and did not try to persuade me to
stay. They merely asked why I was leaving and I old them why.

Ironic that the best service I received from them was when I was leaving!!!

I wish I could say the same.

I phone to cancel my ADSL in July because I lost my job.

they said it would be cancelled in August.

Guess what come august it was still active and when I phoned they tried to
blame it on me.

So I had to pay another months fee.

Only yesterday was my ADSL line finally released from AOL.

PLUSNET here I come!!!!

And how exactly does your comment help the trapped to escape? For
many they don't wish to leave, but escapees always comment that they
wished they had jumped ship much sooner! And as for AOL continuing to
help themselves to your pennies after you have actually left, this is
another story, but you don't have to look far to find someone agreived
on this matter.
