Can I use a wireless router as PC adapter?

I have a laptop with built-in wireless and I need more range to
distant access points.

I also have a Netgear WGT624 wireless router that I am not using.

Can I connect my laptop to the WGT624 router and use the higher power
of the router to communicate with distant access points?

The internal wireless adapter in my notebook would be disabled and the
router would effectively replace that interface.

Is this possible? If it is possible, can anyone point me in the right
direction to understand the settings that I need to make?

TIA, Rich

If it was my router, I'd read the manual for that router (paper or
online) and see if it has a "client" mode.

I would also go to DD-WRT.com and at their Wiki, check to see if it's
in the list of routers that are supported.

Most routers will not work in the client mode as they come from the
factory. The hardware can do it, but the firmware does not.
