Are you sure that you need to upgrade? I'm not aware of any
difference between 98 and 98SE that would affect either networking or
Internet access through a cable modem. Can Roadrunner tell you their
reason?
If you'll be sharing the Internet connection using a broadband router,
I guarantee that the original version of 98 will work.
I recommend using your older computer, as is, with Roadrunner. It
will probably work. If there's a problem, post another message here
describing it.
It's possible that Roadrunner provides connection software that
actually requires 98 SE. However, it's been my experience that it
isn't necessary to install a cable modem service's connection software
in order to use its Internet service.
