Hi all,

I am currently using Dlink DFL300 router which has firewall and NAT.
This has external ip to internal ip mapping. A Virtual Server feature
which can be used to load balance upto 4 internal servers for one
external ip address. It has VPN and i can create policies which will
allow us to restrict cetain external ip address and open cetain ports
for access etc.

The big problem is this is not reliable as if i create a new policy then
other existing policies do not work etc. Did any one use this router??
Can u suggest a better router with above features for below $500.00

Thanks for help.

Well, since this is a Linux newsgroup, the obvious answer would be to
suggest that someone use a Linux machine for their firewall and NAT. The
low-end commercial solutions are very rudimentary, the high-end are
exhorbitantly expensive.

The good shot is that it doesn't take much in the terms of hardware to
duplicate the specs you list. Chances are that you could find a used
machine for $100 or less (perhaps $40 or less) that would easily handle
all of those tasks, and give you far more advanced features to boot.

You will not need anything more than a pentium 1 to function
in a router/NAT capability. If you check around you can even get
one of those for free nowadays

You could probably get by with just a 386. My previous firewall was a 486
DX2 & 24 MB. Even with a lot of data passing through it, it rarely ran at
less than about 94% idle, according to top. My current firewall is a 166
MHz Pentium & 64 MB. It's always over 99% idle.
