How can I turn off broadcast in Debian Woody 2.4.22

I tried to:
ifconfig eth0
ifconfig eth0 up -broadcast
but received warning:
Warning: Interface eth0 still in BROADCAST mode.

Maybe I forgot something or ...?

one of the ways is:
echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/icmp_echo_ignore_broadcasts
