what can I test via bt_test_user login, before I burn my boats and convert. from dialup

I've got a demon dialup account which I'm going to convert to broadband,
hopefully in the next couple of days

1) I've been advised by Mr Demon NOT to convert before the due date
(11th at 6pm IIRC), even if the account appears to be up because BT
reserve the right to take the service up and down for testing before
then.
Is this in fact likely? (It does in fact appear to have gone off now,
round about 6pm)

2)I appear to be able to log in to the bt_test_user via windows-2k(yuk)
- I get a connection message showing speed, and if I start IE it dumps
me in a BT page telling me to logoff in 2 minutes - fair enough.

3) But I mainly want to run this system via a Smoothwall box - I can see
(despite troubling messages about USB interfaces not claimed by any
driver) that the Smoothwall box reports it's connected, and I can tell
via ifconfig that ppp is sending packets off somewhere, and getting
something back - but I'd feel happier, before I convert accounts (and so
possibly loose all further communication), if I could ping something or
otherwise confirm that I've got a solid route out
(Mr Demon - 'don't think you can - Mr BT takes all routing ability off
this test login'...)
So, ideas, anyone please??
Bob

The only site you can go to using that login is
http://www.bt.net/digitaldemo

I don't know how Demon work ("convert" accounts etc) but as that login works
I would say that BT have enabled your line for ADSL - its quite common for
them to do this a few days early.

The chances of them doing testing or something to your line is very remote
(zero) so I would go ahead and use ADSL..

Regards
Sunil

Thanks-that's what I was after (I got near, the bt.net bit, looking
through Google, on dialup ).
Do I need a dotted quad address to find this (I've got no access to the
demon DNS servers I think)

Dynamically allocate IP address and DNS servers when using the BT test
login...

Hmm, Smoothwall still just connects and then hangs, when I try this URL
with automatic DNS

I don't know smoothwall - so things may be different to what I say.

I assume you are trying from the smoothwall PC, if so check
/etc/resolv.conf is a symlink to /etc/ppp/resolv.conf, if not you need to
sort the DNS on the client PC.

To see whats going on put debug in /etc/ppp/options and have a look in
/var/log/daemon.log

Andy.
