Can I Stop Broadcasting SSID?

Hi,

I have a Netgear - WGR614 - Wireless 54 Mbps Cable/DSL Router "G"
There is no option that I can see to stop it from broadcasting the
SSID. I changed the default SSID to something long and unique. Is
there some way of stopping the SSID from being broadcasted?

I don't think so. Some allow that, some don't. I have a netgear ME102.
It doesn't have any option to hide the SSID either.

Sometimes without SSID broadcast you aren't be able to connect so even if
you could stop b'casting, it might not work.

I have the NETGEAR WGR614,

and, yes you can stop broadcast of SSID.

Make sure you have the latest firmware from Netgear,

and in the Wireless Settings section of the configuration pages,

there's a check box (Under Wireless Access Point) to 'Allow broadcast of
Name (SSID)'

uncheck this switches off the SSID broadcast I think?

best wishes,

ian cairns

OK, I am little confused about this. The router says I have
Firmware Version Version 1.1 Release 01 When I go to the Netgear
page http://www.netgear.com/support/suppo...prodNum=WGR614
there are two firmware things listed.

WGR614 Firmware Version 1100
WGR614 Firmware Version 1126 (Official 802.11g Compliant – Spec. v8.2)

Do I need to upgrade? Which one?

As it is right now I don't have that option. I guess if I have to
upgrade the firmware that option might appear.

Yes, I think it's the firmware upgrade that allows hiding of the SSID.

If you click the Version 1126 link on Netgear support page

http://www.netgear.com/support/products/WGR614.asp

it shows you the history of the firmware versions and what they have
'fixed'!

And the release date of 1126 is sep2003 and the 1100 version was april2003.
So upgrade to 1126, and Bob should be your mum's brother.

[I've just written a small moan to Netgear complaining that Version 1126
shows up in the router configuration as version 11.2 (Why?)]

good luck!

ian

Woo hoo!!! I installed the firmware upgrade and now have the option
to not broadcast SSID. Thanks a lot

Don't shout too loud, too hapily, too soon.

I had to go back to the latest stable version (Version 1.1 Release 00),
since with the beta versions the connection was lost after a while, when
having WEP ebabled. To be able to re-connect, I had to power cycle the
AP.
In the chocie between WEP and no SSID broadcast, I chose to have WEP, which
is certainly the best choice from the security point of view.

Everything is working fine here so far. I have WEP and MAC filtering
turned on as well. I will others in the house that use the computers
know to keep an eye on the connection.
