Not any computer literate, so would really like some advice and help.

I am now wishing to go to BB with Wanadoo after having lots of
connection problems with Tiscali Anytime. My question is this: If I
go BB with Wanadoo, will I still be able to download my emails from the
Tiscali server as I will be downgrading to Tiscali P&G?

You will, to start with at least. But don't expect Tiscali to go on
providing you with email services forever without getting any revenue
from you!

As I say, Im new to this and appreciate your reply and experience.

But why dont u recommend Wanadoo. They offer a BB package for 17.99 per
month with free modem and connection and provide 1Mbps speed and
bandwith of 2GB. Is that not good? Are there problems I haven't
realised and should take into account?

Yes, thanks thats great. You've understood my concern completely. I
was wondering why on earth Tiscali or anyone would continue to let me
access email on their server if I wasn't paying them any fee and was
connecting via some other ISP whilst people got used to my new email
address?

Incidentally, if you were to get your own domain name you would avoid
people having to get used to a new email address every time you changed
ISP. This would cost only a tiny fraction (~1/100) of the BB charges. I
don't know why more people don't do this. Perhaps they are not aware.

Shouldn't be a problem! I am doing something similar. I was previously with
Freeserve (=Wanadoo) and am now with PlusNet ADSL. I had a Freeserve Anytime
account which I downgraded to a PAYG account when I switched to PlusNet. I
have no problem receiving emails addressed to the Freeserve address - and I
can keep this PAYG account indefinitely as long as I physically dial into it
(using an analog modem) for a few seconds every 3 months.

I can even *send* emails - while connected to PlusNet - which appear to come
from the Freeserve address. In order to achieve this, the email account in
Outlook needs to point to Freeserve's POP sever, but PlusNet's SMTP server.

If you want to do the same, you'll need to use Tiscali's POP server and
Wanadoo's SMTP server. [Unless of course, you have second thoughts and
decide to go with a decent ISP like PlusNet - in which case, you could save
me a few pence by using my referral code of mills37]

Hope this makes sense!

You don't even need to dial in. You can click on "Retrieve Account" on
http://www.wanadoo.co.uk home page.

In general I would agree that some dialup ISPs require you to make a regular
dial up connection to keep an email account active.

But I have an old lineone.net (now Tiscali) email account that has remained
active although it is some time since I have made a dial connection. All it
does is collect Spam! Best to ask Tiscali themselves. I found that when I
moved from BTInternet the rules for keeping old accounts had recently changed.
I now use my own domain via www.123-reg.co.uk
About £6 to two years forwarding for multiple email addresses at one domain. So
far it has worked well.
