Hi

My Uncle had a broadband connection with Freeserve which got migrated to
Orange.

His telephone is with BT, at least he gets a bill off BT.

He is trying to get out of Orange but they can't/won't give him a MAC
code claiming that he is on LLU.

I thought that to be LLU he would have to had had his voice line with
them as well? (not BT)

Can someone offer some pointers so I can try and advise him on his next
course of action.

For simplicity he wants to migrate his Broadband to BT along with his
phone line.

Orange are being very unhelpful and a little arrogant and at 75 he's
finding it a little overbearing.

Thanks

Barry

Report Orange to OFCOM on his behalf.

Some broadband providers only unbundle the broadband, voice remains with
BT. Not sure if Orange do this, not looked into it.

Also complain to the ISPA as OFCOM will probaly tell you to follow the
Orange complaints procedure first, the ISPA won't.

Also, do BT accept LLU MAC's? A lot of ISP's do not.

Ok, thanks, I didn't know that this was possible.

Presumably as long as he doesn't mind the wait he can still order
Broadband off BT it'll just take a little longer to implement whilst
they sort out 'rebundling' the Orange LLU?

This could well be.

A threat of legal action might help. It worked for me when I had the same
problem with Plusnet. They then discovered they actually *could* give me an LLU
MAC. They don't like to though because it means lots of work for them.

No.

If you have no luck - post again. Ofcom has recently addressed this issue btw on
account of all the similar complaints they got. If you wait a little bit it
should become mandatory for ISP's to give you an LLU MAC anyway.

No.

ISP's shouldn't accept orders whilst without a vaild MAC. If they do, it's
probably an oversight of theirs. Why on earth would you want BT broadband anyway
?

But by 14th Feb 2007, all ISPs (whether LLU or not) will have to give their
customers a MAC upon request. This ruling is from OFCOM. ISPs can't even
refuse a MAC even though the customer has an unpaid bill.

Thanks Graham,

I had told him about the Ofcom change in February, I just wondered if he
could move things on before then.

Why BT? Well, for a senior citizen who can't be arsed with the hassle of
dealing with two parties who could try and blame each other in a dispute
its attractive to have the whole service off one supplier who he
perceives as being capable. (I'm not going any further down that road!)

Apparently he told them he wanted to cancel about a month ago, but
they're still taking the monthly fee so he cancelled the direct debit
himself and now they're threatening to sue him!

It's a shame that these large organisations seem to have to make it so
difficult and stressful for people who want to give up the service.

Regards
Barry

Thanks, that was my point. I just didn't know the date though.

Whatever he does, he shouldn't be tempted to go the 'cease and reprovide' route
which is what I was originally told I'd have to do even though I'd never been
informed about being switched away from BT's broadband service.
