I need to know if one needs 2 displays in order to hookup a simple P2P network
with a crossover cable?

I don't think you need _any_ displays to make the hookup, but the
result might not be interesting.

Be a bit more specific about what you're trying to accomplish.

No, you do not.

However, it is difficult to set something up without being able to see what
is happening. You could boot both machines and move the display from one to
the other to set it up , verify setup and ensure everything is working.

After it is working, use the display for the machine you want to use.

I thought so, as I was trying to do this. It was really a pain. One computer
sees itself, mainly I think, because the other computer is off. I can't have
them both on at the same time with just one display. So they can't 'shake
hands' as it were. The other machine which is XP, says its disconnected..again,
I'm assuming its because both of them are not on at one time. How can one
verify that all is well, considering this scenario? Thanks btw for answering

You can run a computer without a display plugged in, no problem whatsoever.
Start them both up and see if you can see one from the other.

It doesn't hurt to move the monitor between machines when they are turned
on.

You " can and or may " cause damage to the video card or to the monitor by
moving the cable while "hot". There is nothing worse than cooking a $200.00
video card or your 19" display when you can have prevented it. the switch
would then allow you to trouble shoot your problem with out frying anything.
It would also allow you to run both systems at the same time for normal
operations and file sharing. You can purchase a video switch like the
Linksys ProConnect® Integrated KVM 2-Port Switch for about $40.00 or a kvm
from Belkin, or one of the other manufactures out there.

Good Luck,

Supertech
