My file servers is using a ASUS motherborad which has a built-in RAID
controller. I have installed 4 SATA hardisks and run a RAID 0+1 disk array.
Few days ago, the motherborad has problem, the system is hanged during the
windows start-up screen.

1) Is it possible to move these 4 HDs to another motherborad which has a
built-in RAID function, and read all data from the disk array properly?

2) My broken motherboard is old version. I cannot find the same
motherboard. Is it possible to read this RAID disk on other motherboard
with built-in RAID controller

3) Can I use another brand RAID controller?

Please advise.

Another question I want to know. If 2 disks is running on RAID 1, is it
possible to take out one HD and run as normal disk without RAID?

Chris

Did you consult ASUS' support help at their website? I've never used ASUS,
but rather have used Intel and Supermicro. I would assume you can put all
the drives into another machine with a similar controller and it would
possibly read the config off the drives. But I would consult their website.
Here' try their site or contact them. Ibelieve it is free.

As for RAID1, since is is a mirror, yes, you can use one of the drives
without the other. It's a mirror. But for a 0+1, I haven't used 0+1, so
maybe someone else can answer to that, but for a strict Raid1, yes you can
use one of the two drives in the Raid1 set.

Raid 0+1 is a mirror of stripe sets. You have NO mirrored disks. The
mirroring is of the stripe sets which as you well know have no fault
tolerance.

Same brand and series of controller should be able to read the drives AS
LONG AS THE DRIVES THEMSELVES REMAIN PLUGGED IN IN THE SAME ORDER. It also
depends on the controller used.

For example I have adaptec raid controllers 3200S and 2200S. The 3200's
store information at the beginning of the drive. The 2200S stores at the
end. Can't go from the 3200 to the 2200 without reinitializing the drives
thereby wiping all the data.

Really good time to consider your backup plans....
