What is it telling me when I can ping my server (Windows 2000 Server) from a
particular client with no problem but I cannot ping that client from the
server either by computer name or IP address? thanks.

Hello,

on Windows XP SP2, the windows Firewall is up and running by default, which
prevent inbound traffic.

From the server, after ping, do an arp -a.
You will see the mac address, indicating the workstation is reachable.
