Hi,

I have a Windows ME pc (yuk) that refuses to resolve DNS. I can ping any
site I want on the internet by IP address, including the DNS servers. I
have tried using different DNS servers (known good ones). A machine sitting
beside this one on the same network works fine.

I have removed TCP/IP, the network card and WSOCK32.DLL. I reinstalled ME
after I removed these and then added everything back. WSOCK32.DLL is 36k
(the reported correct size)

I have scanned for Viruses with 2 different scanners and I have ran SPYBot
multiple times to remove all adware/spyware.

HEEEEEELPPPP!!!!

Oh yeah, one more thing. When I try to browse through IE, I can type in
www.yahoo.com (or any url or even an IP address). When I hit enter (or
click GO), the address in the address bar changes from www.yahoo.com to
http:///?%20www.yahoo.com. I don't know if that relates to anything or not,
but thought I'd add it.

I created a hosts file and put a valid webserver address in it. I can now
ping the domain name in the hosts file, but if I try to go to it in IE, I
get the http:///?%20 thing in front and a Can't Find Server message.

Thanks for any help.

Jeff

Have you tried to release the DNS? From Start type run, then ipcong
?. You can also run this from a DOS (CMD) window. This should give
you the various settings including the one that will release your DNS
and flush the DNS buffer. I don't have ME but had a similar problem a
while back on Win98.

>jeff,

I'be got a similar problem. My DSL provider suggested
that I have a corrupt Winsock ... I haven't gotten to the
extremems that you have ... reformating the hard drive is
waht I want to avoid. When I try to go on IE I get the
messate: rec://c:WINDOWs\SYSTEM\<file I can't
remember>\dnserror.htm This just isn't making any sense.
It started right after the new year (first day I turned on
my PC) Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely
