How can I measure signal strength of a point to point bridge?

OK - by now you all know I have setup two WAP11's as a point to point bridge
on channel 1.

Using my laptop, my Orinoco card and NetStumbler ... I cannot see the
bridge. I can see my 3rd WAP11 which is acting as a standard Access Point
on channel 6- but I cannot see the bridge on channel 1 to measure it.

Any ideas?

Sure, what you need to do is configure the AP on the far end of the
bridge as an AP so that you can connect your PC with netstumbler to the
near antenna to get a signal strength reading.

Once you've done your signal testing, just flick it back. You can do
this all remotely via the configuration page.

That's it. All you're missing is a pigtail to your orinoco.

David.

Thanks. That's easy enough. What I will do it for both WAP11's and measure
from both sides.

I wish I had a way of measuring the actual link between the two WAP11's.

There's no need, what you see in terms of signal strength at the orinoco
will be what the WAP11 sees, the only difference between the WAP11 and
the Orinoco is the respective receive sensitivity.

Please post back your received signal strength, from that we can give
some useful feedback.

Is there a way to measure the signal strength between the two WAP11's? I
don't have a laptop to test it with. I am just connecting two remote lans.

Sorry for hijacking the thread.

Well, *maybe* there's a way (if the WAPs are version 1)...

Using the ATMEL utility, go to Setup, Wireless LAN and Operational settings.
On the Operational settings page, click the 'Advanced...' button. For the
sake of this measurement, the remote WAP11 must be set up as an access
point. Click the 'Client' radio button and click 'Survey'. The remote AP
should show up in the survey.

I thought someone would suggest that!

Thing is, it's all over the place and I don't think i'd want to rely on
it as a method of measuring the signal.
