Since you are not connecting this computer to the LAN, I don't see why
you would need a NIC. You should be able to connect to the internet
via your dial-up ISP and then connect to your VPN server which will
then give you access to the LAN. I don't know much about VPNs but it
sounds like something is not configured correctly. (I assume that you
have appropriate VPN client and server software.)
