Can laptop w/o NIC browse network?

How can I get a stand-alone W98 laptop to do a Client for Microsoft
Networks login and browse the network? I get a Windows logon & an "unable
to browse the network" message. This machine has installed:

Client for Microsoft Networks; Log on to NT unchecked, quick logon checked
Dial-Up Adapters; bound to TCP/IP
VPN Adapter; bound to Ndiswan
Ndiswan
TCP/IP; bound to Dial-Up Adapters, IP auto, DNS enabled, others disabled
File and Printer sharing for Microsoft Networks; Browse Master auto, LM off
Primary Network Logon; Client for Microsoft Networks
File and Print Sharing button; all checked

It does not have a netcard, so networking is via DUN & DCC. With DUN,
networking is via Internet and VPN. It will connect to Internet and surf just
fine, but on connecting to VPN server cannot see computers on network. With DCC
it makes connection to peer server, but cannot find host or see network.
On boot, this computer does a Windows logon and shows only Entire
Network in Network Neighborhood. There is no validation value in
Network\Logon, no AutoLogon key in Network\Real Mode Net, no DHCP entries under
Services\VxD. It will show itself in the "find computer" box, but attempts to
open it results in "unable to browse network", as do attempts to open Entire
Network. Reboots or second logons (complete) don't help. I have removed and
reinstalled all network components and installed any combination of protocols
to no avail.
What can I do to get a network logon or browse the network? Does this
computer behave this way because there is no netcard? Or incorrect protocol,
connection settings? This machine is used in the office and out, by a rep
who has set it up for a specific job and used it well. We need to connect it
in and out, thus DUN & DCC.
I have read a few hundred threads & learned alot. I hope a solution for
my problem can help others. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated,
Richard

Since you are not connecting this computer to the LAN, I don't see why
you would need a NIC. You should be able to connect to the internet
via your dial-up ISP and then connect to your VPN server which will
then give you access to the LAN. I don't know much about VPNs but it
sounds like something is not configured correctly. (I assume that you
have appropriate VPN client and server software.)

Good luck, jimbo

Thank you Gentlemen,
The machine is not expandable and it seems that I still need a net logon to
work the VPN. I'm thinking of pulling the drive, which would upset our rep.
Appreciate all help,
Richard
