I realize how simple it is to set up ras using windows 2003 and isa2004 and I
have come across much documentation on that senario however I'm attempting to
set up RAS on a windows 2000 advanced server running isa 2000 standard. The
standard seems to be setting up ipsec with a shared pass key but that option is
not available as far as I can see in windows 2000 AS

any help is greatly appreciated

The actual connection to the internet is DSL. I want to let users access the
internal network so that they may use certain software that utilizes an SQL
database on the network.

Server Publishing.

You need to Server Publish the SQL Server to the "outside". The "outside"
user will treat the ISA as if it was the SQL Server.

See the "Guidance" links on my signature.

Thanks Phillip.. I will check out the link but I dont need to get the sql
service outside just need to get the users in and be able to access the
network. If they can access a nework shared drive then their software will
work.

That is what Server Publishing does. It is for letting people to the
resourses of the publishied server,...it is not for "letting the server
out", the SQL Server is not initiating the connection, so it is not "going"
anywhere. The users require some type of Application designed to access SQL
Resources. You are not "accessing shares",...if you are then we are not
*really* talking about SQL.

>If they can access a nework shared drive then their software will work.

That will never be possible short of VPN.

Not without knowing the *exact* nature of what you are trying to accomplish.
The last post you made is making me question what we are really trying to
solve here.

Thanks but that is the ultimate goal is to allow vpn connections for my users
This has been a problem I have been trying to solve for some time. it seems
quite simple but I seem to be missing something rather important.
