Windows 95/98/ME cannot join a Windows NT/2000/2003 domain. Only the user
account logging onto such a computer can log onto a domain and that's it.
The Windows 95/98/ME can become part of the domain browse list but it cannot
join the domain because that OS does not have a SID. The 95/98/ME was
designed for home use and not corporate use.
That being said,
1. Go to Control panel | Network | Identification and set the WinME
workgroup name to the same name as the 2000 domain name.
2. In Client for Microsoft Networks properties, check the box "Log onto
Windows NT domain" and enter in the domain name immediately below.
3. Do not enable File and Print sharing, or if you do, disable the Browse
Master setting under File and printer sharing for Microsoft Networks.
4. Under "Primary Network Logon" select "Client for Microsoft Networks".
5. Restart the computer.
By setting the Windows ME workgroup name to be the same as the Windows 2000
domain name as shown above the machine will have appeared to have joined the
domain in the list of computers displayed in Network Places. But the
machine's appearance there is actually a bit of an illusion since Windows
9x/ME machines never actually join an NT-style domain. They can however
participate in the NT Security of the domain by logging into a domain, but
they cannot be added or removed from Server Manager (NT) or Active Directory
(2000 or above). The same is true for WinXP Home Edition.
