Windows Server 2003 configured as DC running DHCP, DNS, WINS. We have a
couple of other app servers, also Windows Server 2003, and one app server
that is Windows Server 2000. All clients are WinXP Pro. Is there any reason
why I should continue to run WINS? Am I risking any functionality by
disabling it? Thanks! -- tom c

Hmmm. One thing I noticed when experimenting with this. If I disable WINS,
my remote access clients (RDP) can't get to clients on the LAN via a VPN
connection. Apparently the short network name of the LAN clients is being
resolved to an IP address by WINS when we use RDP to connect via a VPN
connection. Any way around this? Thanks.

You will find that there are lots of apps that still rely on Netbios name
resolution. Do you have a particular reason for disabling WINS? It doesn't
use a lot of resources. If you disable it you will see a lot of broadcast
traffic because, without WINS, Netbios name resolution reverts to
broadcasting.
