At my workplace - in order to be able to access e-Mail - I have patched
my department's Windows98 network into the main office's Novell network
(which has an outgoing Internet connection), this enables all machines
on my Windows98 network to access the internet. However, I need to find
some way to disable outgoing Internet Explorer connections on the
Windows98 machines to prevent abuse. Is there any simple way this can be
done ?
To complicate things, I still need Internet Explorer to be able to run
local files (as there are help files and so forth that are based on web
pages). I did actually try removing IE6 from the computers altogether,
but it appears that the machines will just download and run IE from the
server machine when it fails to find a local copy (!).
Internet Connection Sharing is not enabled on any of my machines, so
it's not simply a case of changing that. I don't have access to change
any settings on the outgoing office server either. I considered using a
firewall and just blocking the port, but it's too 'visible' and, as a
result, easily circumventable.
It doesn't have to be too complex, I just simply want to block IE
accessing an external link. Maybe there is some way to alter the port
that is used to an invalid one ?
All suggestions greatfully received !
